It may be a derogatory word in some circles … but it is not for all Male-ian … :)
When i was a kid, I have heard my aunts refer to other women friends as such.
Especially when they havent seen them for a long time. They’d ask their friends …
“kobaa tha eythigandu … nuves feney … hehehe ” … :)

I didnt know we had a demonym for residents of Male’, or were you talking about people who are originally from Male’ ???

Subcorpus, exactly. I even remember back in our school days we would greet each other the same way “Ethi aadhe bala”. And I am sure the tone of ours would have matched that of our aunts and mothers. But then again, amira is quite right too. I certainly wouldn’t use it now :)

All these days I was under the impression that, “Ethi thiyaa dhanee kobnthaakah” meant “Ey” thiya thadhanee…”.i.e. first an exclamation to grab attention before asking the question where you were going. I felt that when the words are said rapidly in quick succession it sounds as if it means “Ethi” instead of “ey thi”.
Ethi blog varah loabi…ahem!! i meant ey thi blog varah loabi ey…okies. Keep on writing dear. Good on ya!
